Destination

Instinct of the Mara is a luxury safari lodge‐camp set in Olderkesi Conservancy, in the southeast corner of the Masai Mara, Kenya. Its classic wild Africa: rustling forested ridges, wide savannahs, dramatic skies, beautifully framed vistas, and abundant wildlife. Secluded yet accessible, this camp strikes a balance of rugged wilderness, refined comfort, and personalized service that makes every stay feel deeply immersive and memorable.

Location & Access

  • The camp lies on 8,000 acres of the Olderkesi Conservancy.
  • Surrounded by lush woodland, with an ancient river and rolling hills.
  • Wildlife corridors link it to the Masai Mara National Reserve, making it excellent for big game, migratory herds, predators and more.
  • By air: About 45 minute flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport, then a transfer to camp.
  • By road: Approximately 320 km from Nairobi, around 5-6 hours depending on road conditions.

Accommodation

  • The camp offers seven Premium safari tents and two Luxury/Family suites.
  • The Luxury options have two separate bedrooms, private entrances, and generous decks, sometimes with outdoor bathtubs or plunge pools.
  • Each tent includes a private veranda overlooking the plains or forest, with views of wildlife coming to nearby clearings or waterholes.
  • Interior styling leans rustic-elegant: polished wooden floors, handcrafted décor, local fabrics, warm tones, comfortable bedding, en suite bathrooms.
  • Shared communal areas include a dining/mess tent, lounge, outdoor decks, fire pit, viewing decks for sunsets.
  • Utilities: solar power, Wi-Fi in communal areas, amenities that blend comfort with sustainability.

Wildlife, Conservation & Community

  • As part of Olderkesi Conservancy, the camp operates under a community-conservancy model: land is owned by Maasai landowners, leased to the lodge; revenues support local projects.
  • Wildlife is abundant: resident populations of elephant, lion, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, big cats; also excellent birdlife. Because the area is less trafficked than the Mara Reserve proper, you get more solitude and less vehicle crowding

Activities

Instinct of the Mara provides a wide variety of safari experiences beyond just game drives:

  • Day & night game drives in custom 4×4 vehicles.
  • Guided bush walks, nature walks, (bird watching) walks.
  • Sundowners on nearby hills or viewpoints; picnic breakfasts or lunches in the bush.
  • Cultural visits: Maasai village visits, school visits and craft markets.
  • Scenic hikes, including to waterfalls within or near the conservancy, where swimming is possible.
  • Balloon safaris (seasonally, or extra cost).
